Buying organic in the tropical north has always been more difficult. Real Foods at Cairns has a small organic produce section, and a variety of processed and packaged foods, but Rusty's Market remains the main venue for purchasing organic. Neil Robson, from Mareeba, is a regular supplier. His entire vegetable production is now focussed on direct sales via the market or from the farm. In Darwin there is now a small home delivery service, and seasonal produce is available from small market gardens and farms in season. I was fortunate to visit Lloyd and Sue Pierce at Humty Doo recently, during the mango season, and to sample some of the fresh mangos and the frozen Mango bar which they are now making.
For remote regions such as the north, and Alice Springs, the gradual increase in organic produce in supermarkets is very welcome.
